New York, NY and San Francisco, CA. September 5th, 2023. Hg, a leading investor in European and transatlantic software and services businesses, today announces that Farouk Hussein has joined the firm as a Partner, helping to lead the Hg Mercury Fund strategy across North America.

Farouk will join Hg’s New York office, further strengthening Hg’s North American footprint as the firm continues to build a leading transatlantic position in software investment, anchored by a leading position and scale in Europe.

Farouk Hussein, Partner at Hg, said: “Hg is increasingly establishing itself locally as a leading firm in software investing. It’s a very exciting time to join as we build out the differentiated capabilities of the Mercury team across the US and Canada, leveraging the strong foundation in Europe. I really look forward to working with David and Alan to grow our team and skill set here further.”

Farouk has extensive and focused experience in software investing. Prior to joining Hg, Farouk was a Founding Partner at SQN Investors, a technology-focused investment firm, where he led several technology investments including Bigtincan Holdings, a sales enablement software business, and Cornerstone OnDemand, a talent management software business. He previously spent over a decade at HGGC and JMI Equity, where he also led and focused on numerous successful enterprise software investments including AMI, Idera, Denodo Technologies, Dealer-FX, Serena Software, hybris and BigMachines.

David Issott, Partner and Mercury Fund Head at Hg, said: “Farouk has an admirable track record and the sharp level of focus on software investing that we’re looking for as we build out our capabilities across North America. He’s a great cultural fit for the firm and will bring a ton of energy to help us further expand our Mercury strategy, as we increasingly look to back businesses looking to scale in North America and Europe.”

Farouk follows two recent senior hires in the US, both with 20+ years of software investment and operations experience, with Alan Cline joining as Head of North America and Paul Zuber as Operating Partner, North American Lead, in 2023.

Alan Cline, Head of North America at Hg, said: “We see huge opportunity for Mercury in North America. Mercury tends to invest in software business at a slightly earlier stage, with a focus on transforming founder-built businesses. It’s been an effective strategy that has a meaningful and growing addressable market in the US across all the software verticals that we focus on. We welcome Farouk who can deepen the bench-strength we have by developing this important strategy.”
